Ann Charters on The Beats and The Blues

Don’t miss one of the foremost authorities on the Beats, doing a special talk at The English Bookshop in Stockholm.

We are thrilled to welcome Ann Charters, a retired professor of English at The University of Connecticut and a patron saint of the bookshop, who on this night will discuss The Beats and The Blues. There will also be an exclusive book sale of the late music historian, writer and producer Sam Charter’s books.

Ann published her critically acclaimed biography of Jack Kerouac in 1973 and it’s never been out of print since. In addition to this, she has edited the Portable Jack Kerouac, The Selected Letters of Jack Kerouac 1940-56 & 1957-69, and several volumes on the Beat Generation.

Aurora by Kim Stanley RobinsonI tend to find science fiction stories that deal with and, in some way or other, end in failure fascinating. A lot of speculative fiction deal with dark topics, pessimism, and dystopia - we are a long way from the optimism that was characteristic for what’s now commonly referred to as the Golden Age of SF, after all - but while the bulk of these stories may not necessarily have a happy ending, they do not primarily deal with failure. When I think of stories that are about failure, I think of Joanna Russ’ We Who Are About To…, about Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games-trilogy, about the immensely pessimistic stories of James Tiptree Jr., the works of Peter Watts, and about Aurora.

Ben Aaronovitch is the British mastermind of the critically acclaimed Rivers of London-series, following the young Metropolitan Police Officer Peter Grant in the supernatural, underground world of London. Aaronovitch has also written for television, including two Doctor Who serials.
