Harry Potter Book Night 2021

Harry Potter Book Night Thursday 4 February 2021

ONLINE | Thursday 4th Feb at 19.00

Welcome to Diagon Alley – now featuring The English Bookshop!

Due to the pandemic, the publisher has postponed the official Harry Potter Book Night celebrations until June 24th. Well, for us in Sweden that’s the day before Midsummer... And we’re not letting a pandemic stop us from celebrating Harry Potter on the ”right” day, right? So this year we'll do an online version instead, and we do have something special waiting for you:

A live talk by founder of Uppsala Slug Club Karolina Andersdotter about Harry Potter in Seven Languages: a linguistic odyssey through known and unknown languages, followed by a Q&A and (technology willing) a short online quiz.

Celebrating 25 years in the service of books!

Celebrating 25 years

UPPSALA | Wednesday 18th November 2020

Today the bookshop celebrates 25 years in the service of books (and book lovers) – that’s a quarter of a century!

Thank you everyone for making these first 25 years possible. From the very first day we opened the first shop in Uppsala on the chilly November banks of the River Fyris it’s been completely true that we do what we do in an ongoing conversation with you – our customers – and none of this would have been possible without your continued support. We may feel a bit older now, but we’re seriously happy. Thanks.

This last year has been a seriously strange year, but the way you have rallied around us makes us both proud happy and somewhat bashful…. You’ve come running – by phone, email, foot, bike, car, social media – to express your concern and support and – to place your orders and join the bookclub. This has carried us through the pandemic hitherto. Thank you.

If things had been less irregular we would have thrown a big party but as it is we’ll have to move that to next year sometime. But do check out the guest book and if you can – stop by the shop and say hello. We’re here for you, safely, now and in future.

SIGN THE GUEST BOOK – SEND A BIRTHDAY GREETING! Send a birthday greeting or share a memory of the bookshop – in social media or in our birthday guest book. Read more at www.bookshop.se/25years

(Feel free to tell the world that your favourite bookshop is celebrating a quarter of a century – use the tag #englishbookshop25 in the socials)

Happy Midsummer!

UPPSALA & STOCKHOLM | Midsummer Weekend

We wish you a happy and sunny Midsummer Weekend with lots of fun, sun, and lazy reading. Stay safe and don’t forget the sunscreen!

The Uppsala shop is closed on Midsummer’s Eve (Fri 19th) and Midsummer’s Day (Sat 20th), open on Sunday 12–16 as usual.

The Stockholm shop is closed all Midsummer Weekend, Friday 19th–Sunday 21st.

Reading in the age of a pandemic

Reading in the age of a pandemic

Worried about running out of reading material during the pandemic?

We’re open as usual and are observing all precautionary recommendations. You are most welcome to pop in and talk and browse and shop (as most of you still do, if this weekend was any indication!) We’re all in this together, you are not alone.

If however you feel that you want a book or two, and are uncertain about how risky venturing outside is for you as an individual (or if you’re self-isolating for not feeling well), we do have a couple of options:

1. Use our regular mail order option. Call, email or message us on facebook (send a message rather than post comment) and we will post you the books with an invoice. (If you want to make sure the book fits in your mailbox so you won’t have to go pick it up somewhere – pick a thin one! You can ask us.)

2. Our extra pandemic option – if you happen to live in our neighbourhood – contact us and let us know what you want and we will stop by with your delivery. You can pay by swish (preferred) or invoice. We’re not charging for this option – it’s a service to our locals. Cycling distance.

Stay strong, read a book and remember your local bookshop is thinking of you.
