Sorcerer to the Crown by Zen Cho is a difficult book to review, simply because it feels like whatever I write, it will eventually and unavoidably simply collapse into one long list of everything that I love about this novel. To start off and hopefully get it out of the way: Sorcerer to the Crown is a highly atmospheric, beautifully written and wonderfully humorous novel.

For the Culture Night in Uppsala, Saturday 12th September, we’re pleased and honored to present you with three great literary afficionados:

At 18.00: Jen Campbell, poet, short story writer and author of the amazingly accurate Weird Things Customers Say in Bookshops-books and also The Bookshop Book.

At 19.30: Marie Phillips will discuss her Baileys prize longlisted novel The Table of Less Valued Knights and Gods Behaving Badly (also made into a film starring Sharon Stone and Christopher Walken!).

And, lastly: our grand finale at 21.00: Ann Charters, beat expert extraordinaire, will read poems and pieces by Sam Charters, among others, Things to do in Piccadilly and What Paths, What Journeys.

Time for another tribute to our favourite Terry Pratchett!
On Wednesday, September 2nd, at 7 pm, we will throw a launch party (of sorts) for the very last book in the Discworld series: The Shepherd's Crown. Special guest, quiz, prizes, cake and lots of friendly Pratchett fans!

Tickets 75 kr, and net proceeds will go to Terry Pratchett's very own Orangutan foundation – and all participants are very welcome to donate, too!

Ann Charters on The Beats and The Blues

Don’t miss one of the foremost authorities on the Beats, doing a special talk at The English Bookshop in Stockholm.

We are thrilled to welcome Ann Charters, a retired professor of English at The University of Connecticut and a patron saint of the bookshop, who on this night will discuss The Beats and The Blues. There will also be an exclusive book sale of the late music historian, writer and producer Sam Charter’s books.

Ann published her critically acclaimed biography of Jack Kerouac in 1973 and it’s never been out of print since. In addition to this, she has edited the Portable Jack Kerouac, The Selected Letters of Jack Kerouac 1940-56 & 1957-69, and several volumes on the Beat Generation.

I tend to find science fiction stories that deal with and, in some way or other, end in failure fascinating. A lot of speculative fiction deal with dark topics, pessimism, and dystopia - we are a long way from the optimism that was characteristic for what’s now commonly referred to as the Golden Age of SF, after all - but while the bulk of these stories may not necessarily have a happy ending, they do not primarily deal with failure. When I think of stories that are about failure, I think of Joanna Russ’ We Who Are About To…, about Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games-trilogy, about the immensely pessimistic stories of James Tiptree Jr., the works of Peter Watts, and about Aurora.
