The House of Shattered Wings by Aliette de Bodard For some reason, fantasy dealing with Christian angel mythology and particularly Lucifer and fallen angels has always appealed to me as an idea, but it’s not often that any of it is actually good. Danielle Trussoni’s Angelology, Clive Barker’s The Scarlet Gospels and Andrew E. Maugham’s Convivium are all examples of novels dealing with those themes that are not necessarily bad but have left a lot to wish for. The House of Shattered Wings is not a perfect book, but when it comes to taking on angel mythology, Aliette de Bodard succeeds where most other authors seem to fail.

James Marrison – The Drowning Ground (Guillermo Downes #1) is our british crime book of the month for April. A man is found dead near his home with a pitchfork through his neck. When DCI Guillermo Downes is called to the scene he realizes the victim is well known to him. A decade earlier, Downes made a promise to the families of two missing girls that he would find their daughters. Although cleared of any involvement, the dead man had been a suspect in their disappearance. And as the ripples from his death spread through the local community it happens to offer fresh hope that the detective might finally make good on his promise.

The game is afoot! Join Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson to follow the clues around Uppsala and solve their latest mystery.

Dress up in your best Victorian garb, grab your deerstalker and magnifying glass and get going! When we’re all tired and cold from a walk in the thick fog, tea and cake will be served in the shop, along with a talk on the subject of ”May I marry Sherlock ­Holmes” by the expert on all things sherlockian: Morgan Malm. 

Prizes for best costume (Victorian & in-character!) and best solved puzzles.

Adventure Trail begins at 3 o’clock, tea and talk at 17.30.
