Books of the Month for December! Our best choices!

in

Fiction: Yes! We are taking the occasion to do a great, light, wonderful, romantic novel set in London. Reminiscent in feel to One Day (but with a happier... no, we're not giving that one away.) We loved it and got all misty-eyed. The novel is Jennifer E Smith - The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight.

British Crime: Mark Douglas-Home - The Sea Detective. A Scottish gem! Remember where you saw it first.

Non-fiction: Countess of Carnarvon - Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey: The Lost Legacy of Highclere Castle. Gotta love it.

Tough Crime: Pamela Beason - Bear Bait. White-knuckle thriller with a biologist hero!

Fantasy: Lavie Tidhar - Osama. This one just won the World Fantasy Award!

Science Fiction: Alexander Jablokov - Brain Thief. Cyberpunk with a new twist.

Paranormal: Christina Henry - Black Lament. Madeline Black is an agent of death...

James van Loon - Blue Magic Woman

Book Launch James van Loon reads & signs his new book Blue Magic Woman Thursday Dec 6th at 19.00

This riveting psychological murder mystery is an echo from the edge, a story between two voices, a novel within a novel about a mysterious blue magic woman who casts a seductive spell on Michael, a passionate, but troubled young artist living in a disjointed world of eroticism and mysticism.

James van Loon, besides being a novelist, is a university psychology instructor, chartered psychologist, and international consultant.

Snacks and drinkies served.

Helena reads two top-notch literary thrillers from both sides of the pond  (and inevitably ends up buying more books, although she promised she wouldn’t, or at least not until Christmas..).

2012 World Fantasy Award

Lavie Tidhar has won the 2012 World Fantasy Award for Best Novel for his speculative fiction novel Osama.
Tidhar trumped an impressive shortlist including authors such as Stephen King and George RR Martin and was awarded the prize at a gala event held in Toronto last weekend.

Set in a world without global terrorism, OSAMA follows a private detective hired to locate the obscure author of a series of pulp fiction novels. These feature one 'Osama Bin Laden: Vigilante'. Tidhar explores the post-9/11 global subconscious, mixing together elements of film noir, non-fiction, alternative history and international thriller. The book was inspired by a number of close calls the author has had with terrorist attacks.

The other titles on the shortlist:

World Fantasy Award for Best Collection: Tim Powers - Bible Repairman and Other Stories
World Fantasy Award for Best Antholgy: Vandermeer (Ed.) - Weird: A Compendium of Strange and Dark Stories
